I really liked the science experiment we did last week. It's my "Tell Me Something Good." We were trying to experiment in order to see the size of the bubbles that could be created. We used a toothpick and made holes in the lemon. Then, we chose a color food dye to add to the lemon. Afterwards, we put dish soap on top. We finished with baking soda. Here's a photo with my explanation of the process! I learned that a reaction happens when we add the different materials. The acids & bases mix together and make an eruption. I liked that we got to use our hands to learn about volcanoes. It was better than just reading from a book. I also was happy to send my work to my parents (thanks Seesaw). You should try it out sometime! https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/erupting-lemon-volcano-chemistry/

Today's "Tell Me Something Good Tuesday" is not a plug, it's just an honest share of some special and powerful learning opportunities. Exploring By The Seat of Your Pants is an incredible organization that generates authentic experiences for students all over the world. As noted on their website, "We knock down classroom walls and take students anywhere in the world, never having to leave their desks." "Students won't remember every math or language lesson, but they will remember the time they were hanging out in a penguin colony in Antarctica or chatting with someone who just rowed across an ocean." At DuJardin, we've connected our kids with science experts across the world. We participated in Women in Science Week, watched live baby sharks in human hands, and connected with other classes with a similar desire to learn!
This week, our first graders are reading Stellaluna- the classic children's book. While they can watch videos and research about these creatures, connecting with a bat conservationist really made the content come alive (literally and figuratively)! Everything was set up by EBTSOYP! THANK YOU, Exploring By the Seat of Your Pants, for transforming learning for all :) If you haven't signed up for their newsletter or tried one of their events, it's worth checking out!
TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: The student scripted, filmed and edited video announcements are up and running! Production has started and everything is in full gear of the DJ Weekly News!
EPISODE # 1
Our Process:
Here's what the kids who are anchors this week thought-
"I liked that we got to do different things and have fun- instead of recess. It's more fun!" "We got to work together and think of ideas for the announcements- like food!" "We've been watching the DJ Weekly News for 3 full years now. It's awesome to finally be on the other side and script, film and edit."
It's Tell Me Something Good Tuesday and there's lots to celebrate!
First of all, Happy Belated Labor Day! Hope y'all enjoyed a nice day with family and friends. We were going to release a podcast today, but there's some nasal congestion going on... so we'll (mostly) spare you from the listen this week :) #1- Our Kindergarteners logged into their Chromebooks for the first time! This is quite the feat. It took both perseverance and patience (and some extra fourth grade hands). Kudos to the Kindergarten teachers for adopting the "No Excuses" mindset. Yes, they logged by themselves with both a username and password. Yes, our five year olds were able to get on Google Classroom. It's a true testament to both the kids and teachers! A few tips and tricks for you-
#2-
This morning, I witnessed a classroom morning meeting begin with TMSG. Students were sharing about the fun things they did over the weekend. No doubt that many of the events were indeed awesome, but the aim was for the kids to think beyond their own little bubble. There's also lots of good going on in the world in the lives of others. Hearts can be full from hearing about the positive all across the world. We shared the story of the Jonas Brothers surprising a fan from CBS's THE UPLIFT. Totally worth checking out :)
What's your something good?!? Schools often adopt a theme for the building. This theme serves as the anchor as the year continues. In any job, it is easy to get wrapped up in the negativity that naturally surfaces. In the world of education, teachers do so much for students and there's lots of GOOD floating around. However, sometimes too often, we find ourselves forgetting the good: #human. After listening to the radio segment on 103.5 Kiss FM on my morning drive, it was clear that "Tell Me Something Good" had potential to be a powerful theme this year.
At DuJardin School every single meeting, morning announcement, classroom day, etc. will begin with "Tell Me Something Good" time. Staff and students will share about the great things happening... both personally and/or professionally. Administrators are writing "Tell Me Something Good" slips and leaving them on teachers' desks. Teachers are beginning each day with the students sharing about something good. This can only help foster strong relationships that creates an environment for meaningful learning. With that being said, this year, all of the podcasts and blog posts this year will spark from the theme of Tell Me Something Good! Rockstar students, staff members and I will be sharing celebrations! Let's spread positivity- you in? |
