With going 1:1 this year and a big focus on 21st Century Teaching and Learning, we weren't exactly sure what to expect. We have less than a month left of school and the staff and students continue to blow us away. Mrs. Volkman (a Kindergarten teacher at one of the elementary schools) and Mr. Volkman (her husband and 6th grade teacher at the middle school) decided to create an unbelievable learning experience for their students. The 6th graders are to teach the Kindergarteners all about the chicks they are studying in class. The middle school students produced incredible presentations to share with the Kindergartners. They were personalized with text, images, and videos. The Kindergartners then watched the videos and are keeping record of their learning in a log. Eventually, they will get to see the baby chicks after they hatch-- AND they'll know about how they got there... kudos to their buddies across town at Westfield. Check out Student Video Blog by these adorable Kindergarteners about the experience!

I asked a fifth grader about his thoughts on student empowerment. He decided to share his thinking with me in an incredible way. This could not represent 21st Century Learning any better.!
Check out the original thoughts from an amazing 10 year old. Goodness! It's already approaching the end of April! Didn't we just get back from Winter Break? I guess the saying "Time flies when you're having fun" really applies to District 13. It is our home stretch! Throughout the past couple of weeks, I continue to be amazed at all our kids are doing! The 21st Century learning taking place is starting to blast off! It's an instructional shift for both the teachers and students. Learning has become much more student led. Lessons include the four C's-- critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. The adults have been in awe of what the kids are capable of and the students are totally taking ownership of their learning and running with it! Here's a little snapshot of what's been going on in the elementary classrooms of Bloomingdale School District 13. |
